Break in at Exmouth Archers - Night of the 23rd August 2010

Following the success of our FITA Weekend the club were unfortunate enough to suffer a break in on Monday night.  Some damage was done to the Clubhouse, and unfortunately they gained entry to the stores at the back.  Some equipment was stolen, including a members Compound bow and arrows.

The Police have asked that we let the other clubs in the area know so that they may review their own security, and also that they may keep an eye open for any equipment that may be offered to them from an unusual source.  If you are offered any equipment, please contact the Police or a member of Exmouth Archers, who can supply the crime number.

October Affiliations...

Dear Club Secretary,

I spoke to Margaret Byrnes yesterday and we agreed that I should email you regarding the New Affiliation Form.

In particular I would like to clarify the situation regarding the '3rd Party Opt Out' column. If you put a 'Y' in this column it means that you are agreeing that information from 3rd parties can be sent to you - it does NOT mean that you are 'opting out' from receiving stuff from 3rd parties. This needs to be checked with each of your Club Members.

Although this information is not in the instructions accompanying the new forms it is on the GNAS website where it says, "3rd party opt out what does this mean? To clarify a Y in the 3rd party opt out box means that the individual is happy to receive 3rd party information - currently only the Ipsos MORI poll for Sport England - and N would mean that the individual does not want any communication from a 3rd party. We do not share your information with any other third party organisations". (If you want to confirm this you can use the 'Search' facility on th GNAS website, put in 'opt out', go to Item 8 - Frequently Asked Questions - and it is currently the 2nd paragraph).

Regards,

Chris Hassall - GWAS Affiliations Secretary

Obituary

William [Bill] Mack

Some of you may not know the sad news that Bill Mack sadly passed away last Friday, 22nd January in his early 80’s.

Bill was a very conscientious and well respected Archery Coach for many years, and many of our previous Senior County Squad members will remember his guiding words. Unfortunately, Bill has not enjoyed good health for the past few years and died in peace last Friday.

I am sure those members of his Club, Yelverton Bowmen, who remember him will miss him as will many of his other friends in Archery.

In case you have not had access to details of his funeral arrangements it will be at Weston Mill Crematorium, Plymouth, on Friday 12th February 2010, at 12 noon.

His family request no flowers, but donations if wished to the British Heart Foundation & Alzeimers Research Trust to Walter C Parson, Funeral Directors, The Firs, 702 Budshead Road, Crownhill, Plymouth PL6 5DY
committeee and other matters be sent to the County secretary by 14th November.

Obituary

Barbara Webber – 1914 – 2009

Not many of you will know of this lady, but it with sadness that we have to announce the very sad death of Mrs.Barbara Webber, 95 years of age, on Monday 12th October 2009.

Barbara was a stalwart member of Exmoor Archers for many years, and was their Secretary for many more years than can be remembered.  She and her husband Roy [90] ran Exmoor Archers as a very successful Club for over 30 years until ill health befell  both of them and caused them to hand over the reins.  Barbara spent many years helping out Marion Hutter with the catering for Dunster Week, and shot regularly there with her longbow.  Her last appearance was there in 2007, when following a series of mini strokes, she decided it was time to hang up her bow!

Barbara died at home with her husband by her side.  Her funeral is to be held at Goodleigh Methodist Church, on Monday 26th October, 2009 at 12.30 pm. Family flowers only, but donations instead to the Epilepsy Research UK.  For those of us who knew her, we will miss her very much!

A request from Bowmen of the Tors

Open letter to all Club Secretaries, Tournament Organisers etc.

Dear Club Secretary, Tournament Organiser etc.

This is a plea following on from my request at our County AGM which some of you attended.  As well as publishing your entry forms on DCAS Web Site, would you please send at least 2 copies of your entry forms by SNAIL MAIL so that Club Secretaries who do not have access to Computers, or E Mail, or Broadband, can receive entry forms to pass on to all their club members.  I notice that Brixham Archers Clipper entry form has already been put on the Web but have not received a copy yet.

I appreciate the cost of postage, and that too thick an envelope would mean paying extra, but you never know it may be worth it in the extra entries you receive from archers who would otherwise not know of impending tournaments, and might be tempted to enter if encouraged by their Club Secretary when she/he hands the entries out or puts a supply on the Club Notice Board.

Hope you will understand my communicating in this way!

Meanwhile, a Happy and good shooting New Year to all DCAS members and beyond.

 Yours sincerely

Margaret E Byrnes – Hon.Sec.

Obituary

Not many of you will know, or will have ever heard of a great person called Bert Shorten, and I apologise if , for the majority of you, this obituary does not mean anything, but I know some of the long standing members of DCAS will remember Bert.

Some of you, however, will know the name of Gary Maben from his recent membership of our County Squad. Bert was Gary’s Grandfather and his mentor for many years from the day that Gary took up archery as a small Junior until recently.

Gary has given me his permission to say with great sadness that Bert passed away last night, 13th August, 2008 aged 87.

Bert Shorten, took his duties as a Coach seriously, and many of us older archers had the benefit of his wise words.  He ran a Junior Club in Plympton, Woodford Juniors for many years, and it was through Woodford Juniors that Mike Byrnes and I first came across Gary and his Grandfather. They came up to Gleason,s factory sports field, our original club venue, and subsequently joined our club. Bert accompanied Gary to many tournaments over the years making sure that all his kit was in order, and encouraging him when he needed it.

Bert became a non-shooting member of Bowmen of the Tors, and was always willing to help and give advice when asked for it.

I am sure that those of you who know Gary and Sandra, along with Mike and I will wish to extend our deepest sympathy to them and their family.

Margaret Byrnes – Sec. of Bowmen of the Tors  and DCAS Hon.Treasurer

DCAS Archer Estelle selected to shoot at the Euronations

Barnstaple Archers Estelle Edwick has recently been selected to represent England at the Euronations.  England did very well as the report from Estelle says....

Our trophy/medal haul on Saturday: Individual Ladies Compound Trophy, 3
silver and 1 bronze medal as well as the Ladies Recurve Team; Gents Recurve
Team; Combined Recurve Team; Ladies Compound Team and the Overall Team
Trophy.

On Sunday there were three gold medals in the ranking round with 3 silver
and 1 bronze medal in the Head 2 Head element.

I was 3rd in the ranking round and 2nd in the head to head so I personally
came away with 3 gold team medals and an individual silver medal - not bad
for my England debut!

The event was held in Antrim, Northern Ireland and the weather was wet and
windy both days. I have attached a team photo of the combined recurve team
receiving our medals/trophy from Lynne Evans and of me receiving my silver
following the head to head.

The recurve team was Vikki Gallop, Caroline Owen, Estelle Edwick, Philippa
Lowe, Nicholas Manning, Rob Hallworth, Lee Williams and Richard Wilkins.
